Position Summary
The Senior Engineer, Manufacturing Automation is primarily responsible for developing complex, custom manufacturing automation projects for the Oatey family of companies and creating innovative solutions to tackle automation challenges across our facilities. As the controls technical expert on a small team of creative engineers, is responsible for the fabrication, programming, and debugging of the control systems for complex automation projects.
Position Responsibilities
- Designs and builds automated work cells, including concept development and review, detailed mechanical and electrical design, component selection and control software programming.
- Troubleshoots and deploys built projects to the production floor.
- Provides direction to less experienced team members and trains new staff on machine operation procedures.
- Leads and oversees project management for deployment of complex automated systems and ensuring it delivers the expected results on time and within budget.
- Develops and maintains clear and accurate documentation of automation equipment and processes.
- Analyzes short and long-term needs for equipment.
- Develops manufacturing cost estimates to support design activities.
- Estimates costs and ROI on custom and purchased automation systems.
- Travels to other sites to implement automation.
Required Experience and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- 5+ years’ experience developing industrial automation
- Experience developing and managing electrical schematics
- Able to learn and master new technologies with little or no guidance
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot equipment problems and perform complex system tests
- Fundamental knowledge of electrical and pneumatic system design
- Thorough understanding of PLC control, including ladder logic, servo control, and robotics.
- Thorough understanding of electro-mechanical measurement systems including distance, proximity, and thermal devices
- Thorough understanding of electro-mechanical actuators, including servo, pneumatic, and VFD
- Ability to work with little supervision
- Knowledge of ISO9001 and LEAN methodology
- Excellent mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity
- Detail-oriented
- Ability to communicate well to other members of the development team
- Proficiency in CAD Software
- PLC Programming proficiency
- Conceptual understanding of CNC machining
- Understanding of operations/manufacturing environment
- Ability and willingness to train others
- Ability to travel domestically (up to 10%)
Preferred Experience and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficient in manual machining and fabrication a plus
- Proficiency in Solidworks preferred
- Experience with flexible materials processing a plus
- Allen Bradley proficiency preferred
Education and Certification
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience
